The Šmarna gora race

Spiral

From the very beginning, the red thread of the Šmarna Gora race course is a kind of spiral that winds around Šmarna Gora in a clockwise direction.

In the first years, the start was next to the bridge over the Sava River. Since 1987, the start has been in the Rocen sports park.

It was similar with the finish – only the first two years (and in 91 – the record) was right in front of the Inn, and since the 90s the track has been leading runners to the finish line around the church.

Until 1990, the runners ran directly to the Smarna gora summit – they did not climb the Grmada  summit.

In 1991 the Record was organized in springtime and later, the October the Race was cancelled due to the independence war.

In 1992, the Smarna gora race was selected as national Championships and for this reason, the course was extended with a loop across Grmada summit.

In 1993 and 2001 kids races were added to the traditional race.

In 2010, the 9,0km course was extended to 10,0km. There were logistics and safety reasons for this course change.
